What is Psychoanalysis?
Thoughts from Dr. Nayar-Akhtar
Psychoanalysis as much a "mode of intervention," as it is a way for me to conceptualize my work with patients. I have training in other modalities, specifically family systems and cognitive behavioral interventions, in order to provide patients with multiple ways to intervene that might be a better fit for them. I attempt to hone in on major life conflicts and adjust to each person in a manner targeted to meet their needs.
My work is not about forcing my way of operating on the someone, but rather working with them to discover what their needs are and how we can collaborate together to enrich their lives in the way they want. I honor my patient's values, agency, and suffering, seeing my work as a collaborative effort rather than a treatment to be delivered.
