Monisha Nayar-Akhtar, PhD, trained in both adult as well as child/adolescent psychoanalysis at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. After practicing for over twenty years in Southfield, Michigan, she relocated to suburban Philadelphia. Currently, she is affiliated with the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia where she is a Training and Supervising analyst and has taught courses on trauma, object relations, and attachment.
Dr. Nayar-Akhtar has a keen interest in applying psychoanalytic principles to community issues. She is the past president of the Michigan Chapter of the Psychologists for Social Responsibility and received Disaster Mental Health training by the Michigan Red Cross. Dr. Nayar-Akhtar is an active member of the American Psychoanalytic Association where she also serves on the Program Committee, is the Chair of the two-day workshop on Child & Adolescent Psychoanalysis, and is chair of COCAP (Committee on Child & Adolescent Psychoanalysis. She is also a member of the International Psychoanalytic Association and has a keen interest in Applied Psychoanalysis and in promoting psychoanalytic thinking in India, her country of origin.
Dr. Nayar-Akhtar has taught on issues of diversity, culture, prejudice, trauma, attachment, and on the basic principles of psychoanalysis. She also conducts continuous case conferences and supervisions at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Penn Hospital, Immaculata University and Widener University.
In 2012, she established the Indian Institute of Psychotherapy Training in New Delhi, India through which she provides ongoing workshops in New Delhi, on trauma and attachment in institutionalized settings. In addition to her community work, Dr. Nayar-Akhtar persistently pursues her vision of sharing her experience as a multicultural psychoanalyst and sharing how that interacts with patients who bring their own diverse experiences into the therapy office. Presently, Dr. Nayar-Akhtar is invested in getting analysts out of the office and into the ‘field,’ meeting people where they are and continuing to spread healing and insight where it is needed.
